Il Veliero Version Excursion
Dance music covers of prior classic dance music are rare when compared to other genres I feel. Rock and jazz albums are rife with versions of classics and standards from their respective genres, but modern dance music artists are more inclined to pay homage to a tune by remixing it rather than completely reinterpreting the piece from scratch.
One exception to this though is Italian musician Lucio Battisti's 'Il Veliero', the haunting melody of which has been covered by at least one artist from each subsequent generation of dance music producer.
Here I have posted Battisti's 1976 original, the DJ Harvey favorite and much sought after cover by dutch disco funk outfit The Chaplin Band, the italo english translated electronic rework by Lama entitled 'Love Is On The Rocks' and finally Lindstrom's contemporary 'nu disco' take on the tune called 'The Contemporary Fix'..

I've loved Lama forever and had no idea the tune was borrowed. Thanks for the edumacation!

who do you think would have the copyrights for this track. I know Batisti has been long gone and I can't figure out who exactly was a part of Lama. Any idea how to find this out? I went this weekend to look for the Lama record it's fantastic.

i'm a huge battisti fan and knew of the chaplain band version. i posted the lama version to my site a few weeks ago after safety scissors played it at disco donuts. today just added another batisti cover (and the original) of "Dove Arriva Quel Cespuglio" by Bob-A-Rela from the same album il velerio came from. they translated the lyrics to english and retitled it "Stop". Bob-A-Rela also did a few other amazing covers like Pink Floyd's "Money" and old blue number "Tobacco Road". i know it's been done a billion times, but sadly i only know the David Lee Roth version :-/
